Collecting Maps
Inside the den of the wolves is a room.
The walls are covered in maps and pictures from every corner of the world.
The shelves are full of books about the ocean and the wildlife.
The white wolves dream of it, and grieve that it lies so far away.
The black wolves pick fights over who knows the most about the ocean.
None of them have ever been wet.
The gray wolf withholds all judgment about an ocean he has never stepped in.
A map is a map. A picture is a picture. A book is a book.
To mistake them for experience is folly.
Most of what we call knowing is not experience.
It is “knowing about” kept at a safe distance from living.
You can know everything about the ocean and never once be wet.
Summer is the season of engaging the field. The season of experience.
Jump in.
Read about it later.
